Fire Police are volunteeer members of the fire company who are responsible for traffic control, crowd control, fire and incident scene security and apparatus security during calls for service. Fire Police in New Jersey are sworn officers who have taken a training course approved by the State Division of Fire Safety. Fire Police currently exist in 14 states of the United States, and the nation’s first Fire Police unit began here in Burlington County in the 1850’s.
